WHEN IS IT TIME TO REPLACE YOUR WINDOWS OR DOORS?

While windows or doors may look good from afar, there are some telltale signs that your windows or doors need replacing. Issues can arise at any time and can often be due to a number of factors including, but not limited to: age, materials, exposure to weather elements (rain, sunlight), compromised water envelope seal and/or sealant, high humidity, lack of maintenance surrounding the frame both interior and exterior, and improper installation.

Most people want their windows and doors to be maintenance free. The best options to have installed, with little to no maintenance include the following recommended options:

  • wood-metal windows and doors

  • vinyl interior - metal exterior windows

  • vinyl interior and exterior windows

  • fibre glass windows

  • composite doors

Rot and decay

Being exposed to moisture and dampness can cause rot and decay over time. In some cases, mould can develop. Not only is this a significant health hazard to you, it is also a challenge for the installer. Depending on how far it extends this can result in costly remediation if the rot and/or mould has spread beyond the immediate area of your window or door.

Condensation

Humidity within the home can often cause condensation when the heat inside your home meets the cold surface against your window. Condensation can happen for a few reasons, but if this is a constant occurrence, it is likely time to replace your window.

Moisture between panes

Double and triple panes should have an airtight seal to reduce heat transfer. If the seal is broken there will be moisture build-up on the inside and outside of the panes.

Drafts

Drafty windows can result in higher costs to your electricity bill, as the furnace has to work harder in colder weather and air conditioning in the warmer months. Single pane windows do not offer the protection required to prevent this, nor do they offer soundproofing. It is worth investing in double or triple pane windows as it will help to lower your energy costs and improve the value of your home.

Cracks and Warps

Cracks or warps in the exterior finish of windows and doors allows the passage for water and moisture to gather which can start to compromise the structural integrity of the unit and framing below.
